Predicting MLB Draft Results Using Cape Cod League Data

A year after my sabermetrics research course, I joined an independent study to continue the research that we had started. This time, we paired the WAR model that we had already created with that summer’s MLB draft results to determine if a player’s Cape League WAR was a strong predictor of future draft position. We also incorporated advanced pitching and batted ball data from TrackMan into our predictive model, which we tested on the upcoming 2024 MLB Draft. Since this project was completed prior to the 2024 MLB Draft, our predictions were only speculative at the time. My group presented the poster above at Providence College’s 15th Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity in April 2024.
